As Witches, we call upon the energy of the Universe. The energy we draw from the moon comes from the moon's connection to the planets. When that connection isn't there, the energy dissipates. That lack of connection is what is called Void of Course.
The moon is considered Void of Course when it is between astrological signs -- it has no major aspect connections with other planets but has not yet connected with the next sign. This occurs every few days. Sometimes it's merely minutes, other times, it's hours or even a day.
Astrologer Al H. Morrison discovered that these voids had an effect on us. He advises: "Go out of business when the Moon makes it's last aspect. Feed your soul until the time the Moon enters the next sign. Then, go back into business." (Secrets form a Stargazer's Notebook by Debbi Kempton-Smith)
When the moon is void of course, we are more fallible. Basically, don't expect anything started or offered during a Void of Course to turn out as planned, or even at all.
As witches, it is best to do nothing during Void of Course. Use this time to meditate or just kick back and relax.
If you attempt magickal workings during Void of Course, any energy you call upon will be your own. And take it from those of us who have done it, it will leave you exhausted and most of your work will be for naught.
In a non-Witch aspect, it is also good to avoid making any important decisions, signing contracts or having a job interview during a Void of Course.
Food for thought: In every presidential election from 1900 to 1972, one of the two major party candidates was nominated when the moon was void of course. Every one of those particular candidates lost! (Lichtenstein 1997)
